Ted McCager Self

Obituary Date: Friday, July 23, 2021

Ted McCager Self went to his Heavenly home on July 30, 2020 to be with his Lord and Savior and his family members and friends who made the same cross over before him. Born in Union County to the late George W. Self and Rev. Lillie Mae Tow Self, Ted lived life to the fullest and was extremely musically talented in writing, singing, and playing instruments. He accomplished many things throughout his 82 years. He was a member of The Church of God.

He attended and graduated from Woody Gap High School in Suches, GA. He won a state competition in Rock and Roll music while in high school. During his senior year he played basketball while also fulfilling the role of team coach. He gave up a basketball scholarship to work with his dad for a while before entering military training to be in the Army Reserves. For a period of time, Ted worked with his brother-in-law in Kentucky during the construction of the major interstate highways.

He owned a fast-food business in Blairsville and a discount clothing store in Dahlonega. He later attended trade school to become a mason and was involved in the construction business in several North Georgia counties.

All along the way Ted stayed involved in the music industry both in writing and recording. The Broadcast Music Industry published 89 of his songs. He also signed under a record contract with the Acuff – Rose Music Industry. His band, The Lone X and The Outlaws, performed Rockabilly Style and one of his favorites was "Little Angel Come Rock Me To Sleep" released in 1960. On the lighter side was "Jimmy Car Door" and "P-nut Butter", of which he sold 50,000 copies to President Carter’s campaign manager to be distributed during his campaign.

Ted settled and lived in Dahlonega and was very close to his family and friends whom he loved very much. He never lost his passion for God and for music. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who are thankful that he no longer suffers from health issues he had been enduring.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Alvin and (Faye) Self, Charlie and (Sue) Self, Jerry Self, Georgia Mae and (Clyde) Spradley; and brother-in-law, Albert Parison.

He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Parison and Lena Ash; and best friend and caregiver, Connie Carver. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held last year during the pandemic at Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.

A Memorial Service will be held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Ted's passing on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 5:00 PM in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home with Bobby Self and Jef Welch officiating.
