Raymond Bryan

Obituary Date: Monday, July 13, 2020

Mr. Raymond Bryan, age 80, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, July 13, 2020.

Raymond was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on February 26, 1940 to the late Elda and Ola Beck Bryan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Margie Whitlock Bryan; his twin sister Ruth Bruce; and his brother Ralph Bryan.

Raymond began working at an early age. He quit school in the 8th grade to begin work operating heavy equipment tosupport his family. Raymond later worked at Pinetree and Anderson’s Service Station. His hard work ethic to provide for his family led him to Standard Telephone Company where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring. Raymond found his greatest peace being outdoors. He particularly loved fishing and began at an early age when he saved enough money to buy his first reel to fit on a cane pole. In the years to follow Raymond fished many tournaments on Lake Lanier with the Dahlonega Hookers Fishing Club. He traveled many miles with friends salmon fishing. Even with his health declining his desire to "wet a hook" never faded. His good friend Larry Beck continued to take him fishing as long as he was able.

Raymond’s love for the outdoors also led him on many hunting trips. He hunted near home or he traveled with his buddies out west and to Ohio. When Raymond was at home you would find him on his lawnmower making sure his lawn was well manicured.

Survivors include his daughter Teresa Bryan; daughter and son-in-law Valarie and Michael Grizzle; grandchildren Abbie Sherrill and Megan Grizzle; and great-grandchild Brayden Sherrill, all of Dahlonega.

Anyone that knew Raymond knew things had to be done his way. In true “Raymond fashion” he planned his funeral service himself to which his family plans to honor. Only a private graveside service will be held. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife in Dahlonega Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, [email protected].
