Carl Edward Webb

Obituary Date: Monday, July 6, 2020

Carl Edward Webb of Clarkesville, Georgia, passed away July 6, 2020 at home after a long fight with cancer.
Carl was born December 9, 1926, to Allie and May (Trotter) Webb.  One of eight children and the son of a tenant farmer, Carl attended schools in Demorest and Dillard, GA, and in Franklin, NC.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theatre  during WWII. While in Germany, Carl met and married Traudel Van Anderhoff, who predeceased him.  Following his military service, Carl received a BA in Forest Management from the University of North Carolina, where he was President of the international honor society Xi Sigma Pi.  He worked for Firestone Rubber Company, serving as a Forest Manager in Africa for several years.  Carl retired from the U.S. Forest Service after 33 years of service. Following retirement, Carl returned to Habersham County.  A lifelong beekeeper, Carl found love with third-generation beekeeper Virginia Ann Stephens of Atlanta, with whom he shared 23 years of wedded bliss.  Together, they enjoyed a life of adventure, including traveling to World Honey Shows in Ireland, South Korea, France, and Ukraine, each time returning home with multiple awards, including the top prize, the Gold Medal for "Best Honey in the World."  Carl was featured in many publications and was well-known in beekeeping circles throughout the world.  The honey from their apiaries have been served at the White House in Washington, DC, the Georgia Governor's Mansion, Le Cordon Bleu, and other renowned institutions.  Carl enjoyed running (he finished more than 25 marathons and 10K races), hiking with friends, ballroom dancing, listening to classical music, and tending his orchard. Carl was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, and cousin.  Preceding his death are his parents Allie & May (Trotter) Webb, sisters Allie May Webb Petty, Louise Webb Bassinger, Elizabeth (Betty) Webb Ottman and brothers Joseph Webb, Sr. and Charles Webb.  He is survived by wife, Virginia; brother, Bobby Webb of Clarkesville; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his special nephew Joseph Webb, Jr.
