Rev. Thomas Hewell Campbell age 76 of Gainesville passed away Thursday April 23, 2020 at the New Horizon Limestone nursing home.
Thomas, known as Hewell, Dad, and Pappy, was a man devoted to God and his family, as a faithful Christian, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. As a young Baptist evangelist, he helped establish missions and spent decades in ministry, including open-air revivals, jail services, convalescent home services, radio broadcasts, and driving church buses and vans to bring people to Southside, Harmony Street, Macedonia, and Temple Baptist Church. He lived his faith and was used by God throughout his time with us.
Despite debilitating health conditions that led to his residency at New Horizon’s Limestone for the last few years, he continued to demonstrate an inspiringly joyful attitude, tenacity, sense of humor, eagerness to smile, concern for others, and unshakable faith. The complete devotion he and the love of his life, Vickie, displayed for each other throughout the tremendous joys, simply pleasures, and crushing challenges since they married fifty years ago this June served as the foundation of his family and a remarkable example for everyone who witnessed it.
Hewell was born Sept. 19, 1943 in Gainesville to the late A.D. & Esta Bailey Campbell. He was retired from Leece-Neville and was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Campbell; sister, Shirley Snipes; brothers, Doug Campbell & Darold Campbell.
Survivors include wife, Vickie Etris Campbell of Gainesville; son, Lt. Col. Troy (Amy) Campbell of Cape Carteret, NC; daughter in law, Candy Campbell; grandchildren, Courtney Campbell (Jackson) Barron, Crystal Campbell (Ryan) Seabolt, Cody Campbell, Katie Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Erin Campbell & T.J. Campbell; great grandchildren, Nora, Parker & Autumn.
