Football: Lumpkin County outlasts Dunwoody

By AccessWDUN Staff

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lumpkin County got a big night from Nolan Matthews Friday as the Indians outlasted Dunwoody in the early hours of Saturday, 32-24.

Multiple weather delays pushed this game to finish just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, but Matthews thrived in that position, finishing with all five Indian touchdowns, four of which came in the rushing game.

The Indians scored first in the opening period after the weather halted play early on a Matthews 1-yard score, but Dunwoody answered on the ensuing kickoff, returning it for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Matthews pushed the Indians back in front on an 8-yard score, but again the Tigers answered with back-to-back touchdowns to take a 21-13 lead.

The Indians cut the lead down to 21-19 in the second quarter as quarterback Mason Hester found Matthews for 49 yards, but a Dunwoody field goal just before halftime gave the visitors a 24-19 lead at the break.

Matthews took over in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns from inside the five-yard line to give the Indians the lead, which they held on to and earned the win.

Matthews had 32 carries for 161 yards on the ground to go with three catches for 95 yards. Hester was 13-of-23 for 197 through the air.

Lumpkin County opens Region 6-3A play next week at GAC.
