Overturned tractor trailer crashes in Jackson and Rabun Counties early Wednesday

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Overnturned tractor trailer wrecks were behind the traffic headaches in Jackson County and Rabun County early Wednesday morning.

Eyewitness accounts called into AccessWDUN's, "Mornings on Maine Street" radio program confirmed that Jackson County emergency personnel were responding to an overturned truck crash along U.S. Highway 129, just south of I-85 bridge after 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 6th.  Lane restrictions were heavilly affecting traffic during the morning rush hours, forcing local police and fire departments to the scene.

Georgia State Patrol, which is handling the crash site investigation says that the driver of the truck said in a late morning release that the commercial motor vehicle was traveling south on the I-85 exit ramp approaching the intersection with US 129 (GA 11). The driver stated that he pumped the brakes, and they were not working. The driver then stated that he had to attempt a right turn to avoid a crash. The unidentified driver attempted to make a right turn and began traveling west on US 129 (GA 11) when it overturned onto its driver side due to carrying too much speed into the turn. The vehicle came to an uncontrolled rest on the center median on its driver side.

Commuters were advised by Jackson County Sheriff's Office's social media page to use alternate routes throughout the morning hours in Jackson County, as the roadway was blocked until 9:00 a.m.

Moments following the Jackson County wreck, social media posts from the Rabun County Sheriff's Office indicated that they were on the scene from a similar tractor trailer crash before 7:00 a.m.  That wreck affected the southbound travel lanes of GA-15 near the Camp Creek area.  Traffic was being diverted and alternated along the northbound lane of GA-15 with delays reported in the area. No word from Rabun County officials as of last update on what caused the tractor trailer to overturn, or if any injuries were reported.
