A Gainesville man was arrested Sunday afternoon after he allegedly attacked a 64-year-old man at an East Hall County home.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to a home on Oconee Circle near White Sulphur Road just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found Michael Paul Ledford, age 46, and the victim outside of the home.

"Ledford and the victim had been involved in a physical fight in the back yard of the residence," the sheriff's office said. "Ledford tackled the victim to the ground and began choking him from behind by wrapping his arms around the victim's neck. Mr. Ledford also punched the victim in the eye and ear, causing visible injuries."

Witnesses reportedly told investigators that the attack appeared to be unprovoked, although Leford was reportedly known to the victim and was also charged with public intoxication.

While deputies were trying to arrest Ledford at the scene, he reportedly became combative with them as well.

"He refused commands to remain seated, instead becoming violent and kicking at the deputies," the sheriff's office said. "Ledford also threatened injury to a third deputy, saying he would head butt and bite him. The deputies were not injured.

The 64-year-old victim was treated at the scene by emergency crews. Ledford was arrested and taken to the Hall County Jail on charges including aggravated assault and battery, as well as three counts of obstruction of an officer.

Ledford has been granted bond of $17,500, but has not made that bond as of Monday afternoon and remains in the jail.
