The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) District 3 Democratic primary runoff has been decided.
Peter Hubbard is the presumed winner, getting 56% of the vote with 80% reporting.
The tally as of 8:40 p.m. has Hubbard at 30,717 votes to former Atlanta City Councilperson and state representative Keisha Sean Waites at 24,368 votes.
The runoff had exceptionally low turnout, with roughly 1% of active voters in the state voting in the election.
In the general election, the turnout was still just 2.7%.
This comes after nearly three years of delays due to lawsuits surrounding the statewide nature of the races. The races for the PSC ultimately stayed statewide for all five districts, and all five seats are currently held by Republicans.
Hubbard will square off against incumbent Republican Fitz Johnson for the District 3 seat on Nov. 4.
Hubbard is a project director and has advocated for green energy. Waites, his opponent in the runoff, actually accrued more votes in the general election, with 46% of the vote compared to Hubbard’s 33%.
District 2’s candidates were already decided last month and will be between incumbent Republican Tim Echols and Democrat Alicia Johnson.
The state’s PSC has the power to set rates and energy plans for Georgia Power, Georgia’s largest electric utility. They also regulate telephone and natural gas utilities in the state as well.
