Union County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone call scams

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter
The Union County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a new scam reported in the area.

The department warned that the phone scam involves people calling and telling the potential victim that they are with United Community Bank and claiming that the person they called was impacted by a fraud or scam case. The caller then asks for personal information and attempts to keep the person on the phone for as long as possible.

UCSO advised that if the caller is unknown, hang up and call the number that is confirmed to be a legitimate number for the bank. The post also reminded citizens to never give their information to unknown callers.

While most of the bank related scams have been phone calls, the agency said phone scams can also come in the form of text messages, often with prompts to click on an unknown link. UCSO reminded the public to never click on links from unknown numbers or provide private information to unknown numbers.

UCSO said that those with questions regarding possible scams can call the sheriff’s office at (706) 439-6066.
