Grand expansion of historic Gwinnett County school on Monday

By Jeremiah McBurrows Jr.

The Gwinnett Library Board of Trustees is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand expansion of the Hooper-Renwick school in a partnership with the Hooper Renwick Preservation Committee on Monday at 2pm at 56 Neal Boulevard in Lawrenceville.

Hooper-Renwick once acted as the only public school for Black students in the Gwinnett County School System, and will boast an improved 27,327-square-foot space for a themed library, celebrating the schools history and its community impact.

The library will include amenities, community space, and exhibits that showcase stories and accomplishments related to the school.

Speakers will include Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III, Gwinnett County Sheriff and former Hooper-Renwick School student Keybo Taylor along with many more.

The project was funded by the County's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) with additional contributions from the city of Lawrenceville. This also provided the 3.8-acre site, sidewalks, lighting and landscaping for the project.
