White County held its grand opening for the new recreation center at Yonah Preserve on Thursday.
Community members joined county officials to explore the facility.
The new center features two full-size basketball courts, four volleyball courts or six pickleball courts.
It also includes a community room, concessions area, and new office space for the staff.
The building also has the capability to serve as a mass shelter during large-scale emergencies.
The project was designed by BCA Studios out of Gainesville and constructed by Charles Black Construction out of Cleveland.
Charles Black Construction also provided a food truck from The Varsity.
White County Board of Commissioners Chairman Travis Turner opened the evening by sharing the history of Yonah Preserve and the county’s efforts since leasing the property from the state in 2013 to fully acquiring the property in 2018.
He emphasized the fact that the project was funded and completed with no debt to the county.
“This center represents years of planning, partnership, and perseverance,” Turner said. “It’s more than a building… it’s a space where community, wellness, and opportunity meet.”
