Suspect in custody after attempting to start fire inside Bethlehem-area Target store

By AccessWDUN staff

No injuries were reported Sunday morning after a male suspect allegedly attempted to start a fire inside a Barrow County retail store.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office said the suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody shortly after the incident was first reported.

Authorities say they received a 911 call at 11:41 a.m. describing a male individual attempting to start a fire inside the Target store on Loganville Highway in Bethlehem.

Deputies arrived on scene a short time later, and helped oversee the evacuation of the premises. Although it is unclear whether the suspect was able to successfully ignite a fire inside the store, the Sheriff's Office said that all customers and staff members were able to safely make it outside the store.

“Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts, a potentially dangerous situation was contained without harm,” said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith in a media release sent late Sunday afternoon.

No other details have been released, and the investigation is said to be ongoing.
