Train track tragedy in Duluth Wednesday evening claims life of a juvenile

Officials with the City of Duluth Police Department are investigating a fatality along train tracks in their city earlier this week.

Dispatchers with the Duluth Communcations Center received a call Wednesday, May 14 at around 8:45 p.m. from authorities with Norfolk Southern in regards to a train that had reportedly struck a pedestrian along who was thought to be laying on the tracks near  the non-crossing location by Rogers Bridge overpass and Dailey Drive. When officers arrived on the scene moments later, they located a deceased juvenile along the tracks.  A press release from Duluth Police Department says  the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation showed the southbound train was heading through Duluth Wednesday evening when operators obsxerved an individual lying along the tracks, forcing them to activated emergencyh braking and horn alarms. However, investigators say the operators efforts could not avoid the collision.

The Duluth Police release says Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office responded on the scene and was able to identify deceased juvenile, but have withheld their identity until next of kin has been notified. Further details behind the collision have not been released as the case remains ongoing.
