State Senator Steve Gooch announces campaign for Georgia Lieutenant Governor's race

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Senator Steve Gooch of Georgia's 51st District (R-Dahlonega) has filed paperwork and officially announced today that he is running for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.

Senator Gooch has made the formal announcement through a press release, saying that he will be offering a proven record of conservative leadership and an unwavering commitment to standing with President Donald Trump to put America First.

Gooch said Thursday, “I’m running for Lieutenant Governor because Georgia deserves bold leadership that will stand up to the insanity of the Democrat Party, protect our families from the invasion of criminal illegal aliens and keep our economy vibrant and strong. I see a Georgia that is the gold standard for our great country — a state that leads the way in securing our borders, stopping violent crime, abolishing the state income tax, and defending the values that make America great.”

Guided by his faith in God, love of country, and deep devotion to family, Steve Gooch is ready to lead Georgia into a stronger, freer, and more prosperous future. “I am unapologetically pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, and pro-school choice. The out of touch liberals who have overtaken the Democrat Party want to destroy all the things that have made our state a wonderful place to live work and raise a family. ”

The release added that Senator Gooch has been a consistent and vocal supporter of President Donald Trump ever since he came down the escalator in Trump Tower in 2015. “The liberal Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other media outlets mockingly call me a MAGA champion at the State Capitol — and I wear that as a badge of honor,” Gooch said. “I proudly stand with President Trump and will continue fighting to restore the greatness of our country.”

Senator Gooch currently represents Georgia’s 51st District in northeast Georgia. In 2022, his colleagues elected him as Majority Leader of the Senate Majority Caucus, recognizing his tireless efforts to advance conservative priorities under the Gold Dome.

Gooch has been recognized for his effectiveness and leadership, having previously served as a member of the Georgia Department of Transportation Board and as Lumpkin County’s sole County Commissioner. Gooch has been named one of Georgia Trend’s Top 100 Most Influential Georgians for nine consecutive years and was selected as Georgia Chamber Legislator of the Year in 2015 and 2023.

Gooch is a graduate of North Georgia College and State University (now the University of North Georgia), where he earned both a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. He owns a private environmental services company in Dahlonega. Steve and his wife Shannon live in Lumpkin County and are the proud parents of three children: Samuel, Seth, and Sawyer.
