The long-discussed Sardis Connector road project for northwest Hall County is finally set to begin construction, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for this week.
The Hall County Government announced recently that the ceremony will be held Thursday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m. at the former site of Happy Pappy's Storage on Thompson Bridge Road at the intersection of Mount Vernon Road, which is expected to be the northern end of the new roadway.
The roadway, which county officials say has been discussed for over 20 years, will be a new four-lane divided highway connecting Dawsonville Highway (Ga. 53) to Thompson Bridge Road (Ga. 60.) It is expected to be a major new thoroughfare for the growing area.
"Ultimately, it will serve as a vital piece of connectivity not only to the citizens of my district," Hall County District 2 Commissioner Billy Powell said in a release, "but also to the Hall County community as a whole."
More than $86 million is budgeted for the project, with Hall County set to foot the bill for $28.3 million of that cost. The local funds are coming from SPLOST dollars.
The remaining $56 million is being financed by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be open to the public. Hall County officials have previously said they hope for the new roadway to be open to the public sometime in 2027.
