Motorists along State Route (SR) 316 in Barrow County will need to slow down for the foreseeable future.
On Friday, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) began reducing the posted speed on SR 316 from 65 mph to 55 mph for the eastbound and westbound traffic between the intersections at Barber Creek Road and SR 211/Bethlehem Road.
The work is part of a construction project coinciding with the installation of temporary barrier walls for bridge work at both Barber Creek Road and SR
211/Bethlehem Road.
Once completed, the at-grade crossings will be replaced with overpass bridges, diamond interchanges and a single-lane roundabout and new frontage roads
The GDOT said the reduced speed limit will remain in place for the duration of the project. Construction is anticipated to be completed in sometime in 2028
The changes affect both directions near Barber Creek Road and SR 211/Bethlehem Road within the Statham city limits. The temporary concrete barriers will tighten traffic lanes and impact traffic flow during this phase of work.
This project is part of a series of roadway improvement projects along SR 316 from SR 20 in Gwinnett County to SR 10 in Athens, Oconee County. SR 316 at Barber Creek Road is packaged as a bundle with SR 318 at SR 211/Bethlehem Road.
