Patients in northeast Georgia with back issues now have a new option for spine surgery that results in less pain, smaller scars and faster recovery – and you don’t have to drive to Atlanta to get it.
Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton now offers ultra-minimally invasive spine surgery for people suffering from herniated discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis or osteoarthritis and more.
The NGMC's executive director of Neurosciences, Michael Glanzman says, “This can be a game changer for people who have put off spine surgeries for years out of fear of how painful and invasive surgery can be. Ultra-minimally invasive spine surgery offers benefits such as reduced scarring, faster recovery times and reduced hospital stays with many patients going home the same day – as well as improved functional outcomes to help our patients heal quickly and get back to their quality of life.”
A press release from the NGMC notes that surgeons use a camera on a flexible tube called an endoscope to view the patient’s spine in high definition and use thin surgical tools to perform the procedures – all through an incision that’s about the width of a pencil. Officials add that the advanced technique helps avoid damage to muscles responsible for stabilizing the back and reduces the need to remove bone.
