White County responds to two brush fires Tuesday

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter
Several fire and emergency crews were called to assist with two  brush fires in White County Tuesday.

Crews initially responded to a controlled burn that had escaped containment near Hwy. 75 Alternate and Chestatee Drv. at 11:36 a.m. High winds and mountainous terrain caused the fire to breach its original perimeter, according to officials with White County Public Safety.

Once crews arrived on the scene, they began containment efforts alongside the Georgia Forestry and the Helen Fire Department. All agencies worked to contain and prevent the fire from spreading.

Authorities estimate six acres of wooded land were impacted by the blaze, but no damage to nearby structures were reported.

Later on in the day, at 3:22 p.m., crews were called to a second brush fire near Hwy. 75 South and Grand View Drv. in Cleveland. The Georgia Forestry and the Cleveland Fire department were called to aid in the fire containment. No details were released on damage the incident caused.

Meanwhile, White County Public Safety is continuing to urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, in light of large wildfires in Rabun County and Pickens, SC.
