As wildfires continue to burn in Rabun County and South Carolina's Pickens County into the early morning hours Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) is extending its Red Flag Warning for outdoor fire conditions from northern Georgia into the central portion of Georgia today.
Then NWS is warning today's conditions in Northeast Georgia to be critical to near critical for fire weather conditions as far south as Central Georgia today. Low relative humidity, breezy winds, and dry fuels/vegetation will lead to critical or near-critical fire weather conditions, where a Red Flag Warning is in effect for areas where winds will be gusting to 25 mph or higher, with a Fire Danger Statement in effect for areas with lower wind gusts.
There is also a high confidence in hazardous fire weather conditions, with a low potential for the Red Flag Warning area to be expanded if winds are stronger than forecast. There is a potential for severe weather on Sunday and Monday, but confidence is low at this time, according to Wednesday's NWS warning. They continue to remind residents that additional updates will be provided if confidence in severe weather increases.
