Plans for Gainesville paid-parking system for downtown square have been removed

By Logan Landers Anchor/Reporter

The City of Gainesville announced at its City Council meeting last night that the original plan to introduce a paid parking system on the downtown square by spring 2025 has been withdrawn.

City Manager Bryan Lackey was the representative who removed the item from the agenda at the meeting.

Gainesville Mayor Sam Couvillon stated that "I think what happened is, after we had the presentation on Thursday, we started talking and hearing input and at the end of the day, we want it to get it right."

The original press release from the city stated that drivers would utilize the “ParkGVL” app and use a ticketless QR code system that would record drivers' license plates, vehicle make/model and parking zone.

Users would have then rendered payment of 25 cents for every half-hour up to two hours ($1 total for two hours) and after two hours, a $4 hourly rate would take effect until midnight.

No timetable has been announced for when or if the paid parking system would be brought back for future consideration.
