Basketball: GHSA's latest ranking have area teams ranked high

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

Some region tournaments will begin this weekend across the state, while some regions wrap up the regular season on Friday.

With that said, predicting where teams in Class A Divison 1, Class 2A and Class 3A will land in the state tournament, based on the Georgia High School Association's postseason rankings, is nearly impossible.

What we can tell you for sure is what the current rankings reveal.

Let's start with the Class 3A boys as Cherokee Bluff (21-3) holds on to the No. 1 ranking, heading into a rather large home game against Jefferson on Friday. The Dragons beat Bluff in double overtime a couple of weeks ago. East Hall also beat the Bears, but despite the two losses, the Bears have remained atop the rankings. They hold a slim lead over No. 2 Cedar Grove, and East Hall (20-4) is lurking in the third spot. Jefferson (16-6) is ranked ninth.

The Vikings clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's Region 8-3A tournament and a state tournament berth. They'll be opposite of Cherokee Bluff and Jefferson in the region tournament, and barring an upset in the semifinals, they'll face either Bluff or Jefferson in the title game.

In Class 2A, Union County (19-4) holds the No. 4 ranking. The Panthers have a great shot to make the Region 7-2A title game but will most likely play North Cobb Christian, who beat them twice in the regular season. If the Panthers can pull an upset in the region tournament, they would grab a No. 1 seed and likely be the No. 2 overall seed in the Class 2A tournament.

Meanwhile, in Class A Division 1, Rabun County (19-5) is ranked fourth but could grab a top-3 state tournament seeding if they win the Region 8A Division 1 tournament.

On the girl's side, Jefferson (19-4) holds the highest ranking among the area's girls' teams. They are No. 2 in the Class 3A PSR. Unless they are upset in the Region 8-3A tournament, they should hold on to that No. 2 ranking. Cherokee Bluff (17-7), also in Region 8-3A, is ranked seventh.

Region 6-3A has three teams ranking in the top 12. White County (18-6) remains fourth, while Chestatee (17-7) is 12th.

In Region 8A Division 1, Banks County (18-5) is ranked ninth.
