GBI investigating after inmate dies at Gwinnett County Jail

An inmate at the Gwinnett County Jail, died on Jan. 27 after he was found unresponsive in his cell.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office said Phillip Antwon Munroe was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine security check in a maximum-security housing unit. Deputies responded to the medical emergency around 2:30 a.m., with officials saying they immediately administered life-saving measures.

Medical staff continued to provide treatment until Emergency Medical Services arrived and declared him dead.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating and further details will be withheld until the investigation is complete.

“The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the loved ones of Phillip Antwon Munroe during this difficult time,” a press release authorities Monday afternoon said.

Munroe was arrested on July 6, 2022, on charges of aggravated assault, robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle and battery.
