Authorities: Fake patrol car pulling over civilians in Towns, Union counties

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Authorities are advising the public that an unidentified person has been pulling over civilians posing as law enforcement in the North Georgia mountains.

The sheriff's offices for both Towns and Union counties have posted to social media that an unmarked black Dodge Charger with tinted windows has been reported pulling over vehicles in the area. The vehicle has also reportedly been spotted pulling over civilians in neighboring Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Authorities have not reported the suspect harming or taking money from those pulled over, but they area advising that it is not a law enforcement officer. The suspect driving the car is being described by multiple agencies as a short white male with brown hair wearing a gray and dark blue uniform with a vest and carrying a radio and handcuffs.

"Our patrol deputies with Union County Sheriff's Office are uniformed with the distinctive county patch," the post by Union County officials said. "Non-uniformed members will have a clearly visible badge and rarely conduct traffic stops, but do occasionally."

The Towns County Sheriff's Office and Cherokee County, North Carolina Sheriff's Office both issued similar statements about their officers' uniforms.

"If you are ever in doubt do not hesitate to call 911," the post by the Towns County Sheriff's Office said. "Explain your fear and a qualified member of Towns County 911 will guide you as to what to do next."
