A Gainesville woman was charged with theft by deception and forgery after she reportedly bought items from local businesses using fraudulent checks.
Hall County Sheriff’s Office officials said Megan Francis Seabolt, 34, stole from a Clermont business and attempted to steal from a Gainesville business in December.
A release from the sheriff's office said Seabolt first stole two large sheds from Wilson Brothers Shed Haven on Cleveland Highway in Clermont on Dec. 15 using fraudulent checks she ordered online with information she obtained from a Lawrenceville business.
She also attempted theft of a camper and vehicle from Twins Trucking and Equipment on Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville on Dec.22 using the same checks. Seabolt reportedly represented herself as the owner of the business when using the checks to conduct transactions.
Authorities were made aware of the theft from Shed Haven when the business owner contacted investigators on Tuesday, Jan. 14. They were able to use evidence obtained from that incident to tie Seabolt to the crimes. She was taken into custody at her residence in North Hall on Wednesday.
Investigators estimate Seabolt was able to steal at least $8,000 worth of items and believe that she may be involved with additional crimes of a similar nature.
Seabolt faces the following charges:
-
Theft by deception (two counts)
-
Forgery in the third degree (three counts)
-
Forgery in the fourth degree
She is also being held on an outstanding warrant from Douglas County.
