Habersham Co. schools closed Monday; Hall Co. running on two-hour delay

Owing to the continued impacted of Winter Storm Cora, area school systems have announced planned closures and delays for Monday.

Habersham County schools will be closed to students and staff on Monday. Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Nancy Rennels said Sunday afternoon that the decision was made in light of many county roadways still being covered in ice and snow.

"Temperatures will fall into the 20s tonight [Sunday night] resulting in refreezing of slush and wet areas," she said via email. "Parents should make plans now expecting poor road conditions to impact having school during this week."

Habersham school officials plan to check area conditions on Monday afternoon in order to determine if county schools will reopen later in the week.

"We will have school only when conditions are safe for student drivers and buses," Rennels said.

She also noted that the scheduled January regular board meeting has been moved to Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm.

Hall County schools will be open on Monday, but will uniformly operate on a two-hour delay.

Director of Communications Stan Lewis said Monday late afternoon that the delay would allow for all schools to operate during daylight hours.

"Buses will run their regular routes, but two hours later than usual," Lewis said. "Students and staff should report to school, and all practices, competitions, and extracurricular activities after school will proceed as scheduled."

The delay applies to all county students and staff.
