Weather officials say overnight re-freeze to create hazards

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

While the snowfall has wrapped up, that doesn't mean Northeast Georgia is out of the woods for hazards from Winter Storm Cora just yet.

Forecasters say a drop in temperatures Friday night into Saturday morning could create more problems on the roads.

"We're going to continue to see that freezing rain potential through the overnight hours into the 1:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. timeframe," National Weather Service Forecaster Sam Marlow said Friday afternoon. "We're going to start to see that re-freezing right as the sun goes down, in fact, in some places I think we're already starting to see it."

Marlow said while things may improve Saturday, with sunny conditions and temperatures getting at least a few degrees above freezing, he said any moisture that remains on the roads into Saturday evening could re-freeze again, making for more hazardous conditions Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Road conditions have been perilous throughout Friday, with many local law enforcement agencies reporting a significant uptick in accident reports and urging residents to stay off the roads unless necessary.

So far, power outages have not been a major issue, with only a few scattered and brief outages being reported in the region through Friday. However, Marlow said high winds Saturday morning could start to create issues there as well.

"We're going to start seeing those winds pick up early (Saturday) morning, around the 5:00 a.m. timeframe," Marlow said. "If there's any trees with icing on them, what that could mean is tree branches are more likely to fall, trees could be at risk of falling as well."

Winter Storm Cora dropped at least an inch and a half of snow across the entire region Friday, with some local areas reporting higher totals up to nearly five inches. Since around noon, that snowfall has largely transitioned to sleet and freezing rain.
