Local officials warn residents to stay off the roads as conditions worsen

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

As Winter Storm Cora continues to dump snow, sleet and freezing rain across Northeast Georgia Friday, law enforcement agencies are warning the public to stay off the roads as much as possible.

The Gainesville Police Department and Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office both posted images of serious accidents involving overturned vehicles on the snowy roadways to social media Friday morning.

"We have an increase in calls from accidents and the wrecker services cannot keep up so if you go out and slide off the road you may have to wait a while," Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said in a social media post.

Hall County authorities reported a serious accident that shut down the intersection of Ga. 53 and Ga. 211 in Chestnut Mountain. The roadway has since been re-opened, but officials warn that conditions remain hazardous.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office has posted a live map outlining reported road hazards across the county.

Forecasters warn that the morning snow is expected to transition to freezing rain, with temperatures projected to remain at or below freezing throughout Friday, meaning road conditions could worsen into the afternoon and evening.

Meanwhile, the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Friday that those who are stranded  on roads within their jurisdiction can call their non-emergency line at 706-864-3633. So long as the department has availability, deputies can help transport individuals home.
