Septic System care should not be ignored during winter storm conditions

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Many homes and businesses in northeast Georgia are covered with private septic systems and tanks for their properties, and are just as vulnerable to the elements during winter storms as are municipal septic systems for local communities.

Gainesville-based S & S Septic Services has offered tips for consumers, when it comes to properly caring and treating your tanks and septic lines during winter months:

  • Insulation.  Ensure your pipes are properly insulated and consider using heat tape on exposed pipes.
  • Keep water flowing.  A steady flow of water helps to prevent water lines from freezing. Run faucets regularly, even if its only trickling out.
  • Water conservation.  Minimize the usage of water into your system, to reduce the burden on septic systems by reducing and limited time in showers, run only full loads of laundry and fix leaky faucets.
  • Excessive outdoor water from snow and ice runoff.  Winter Storm Cora's after affects could create more water rundown from house roofs and gutters, and could flood septic drain fields.
  • Power Outages.  Many pumps run off electricity, and during a power outage septic pumps may not work, leaving potential for line backups, risking system failure.

If you experiencing any of these issues, you should contact a septic professional.  S & S Septic Services offers 24/7 service and coverage for customers.  You can contact them at 678-649-8044, or visit their website at: https://www.septicga.com/
