UGA head football coach Kirby Smart’s father passed away early Saturday morning from complications of hip surgery.
University of Georgia athletics confirmed the news today, and said Sonny Smart died at 12:15 a.m. on Saturday surround by his wife, Sharon, and three sons Karl, Kirby and Kendall.
Sonny Smart fell on New Year’s Eve while walking in New Orleans. He had hip surgery earlier this week but according to the statement had complications during the surgery.
“The Smart family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Ochsner hospital and medical staff for the exceptional care provided to Sonny,” the statement read. “Additionally, they ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength, and guidance.”
Sonny Smart coached last coach high school football in Rabun County. He coached the Wildcats nine seasons from 1995-2003, finishing with a 46-48 record. He led Rabun County to the 1998 Region 8-A championship, a Class A quarterfinal appearance and an 11-2 record, the best of his tenure. He coached the Wildcats to four seasons over .500 and two playoff berths.
He also coached Bainbridge, where he Kirby Smart played, from 1998 to 1994, leading the Bearcats to a 10-3 record, the Region 1-4A championships and a Class 4A semifinal appearance.
Sonny Smart ended his high school coaching career with an overall 90-78-1 record in 16 seasons.
