Football: Former Hab Central, Jefferson coach Cathcart steps down at Loganville

LOGANVILLE, Ga. — Current Loganville coach Gene Cathcart announced on Tuesday he was stepping down "for health reasons" effective immediately.

It was first reported by The Walton Tribune on Tuesday.

Cathcart, who coached the Red Devils to a 5-6 record and a playoff berth in 2023, told the Tribune that long-time assistant Stephen Smith will serve as the interim coach for the rest of the season. Loganville was 0-4 to start the 2024 campaign.

The Red Devils play in Region 8-5A and were in the same region as Jefferson and Flowery Branch in 2023. They stayed in 8-5A after the GHSA reclassification and are now in a region with northeast Georgia-area teams Jackson County and Habersham Central.

The northeast Georgia area was no stranger to Cathcart with ties to both Jefferson and Habersham Central. He coached the Raiders from 2003-08, going 40-27, winning a pair of region titles (8-4A), and advancing to the quarterfinals in 2006 and 2007. Cathcart led Jefferson from 2017 to 2021, guiding the Dragons to two region titles, two quarterfinal appearances, and eventually to the 2020 Class 4A state championship game with a team featuring current Georgia Bulldog star Malaki Starks. He went 51-11 at Jefferson.

In between those two stops, Cathcart was the head coach at two South Carolina high schools -- Greenwood and Seneca. From 2009-13 he helped lead Greenwood to three straight Class 4A Division II state championship games, including winning the 2012 title. Cathcart coached at Seneca for one season (2014).

Cathcart left Jefferson after the 2021 season to return to South Carolina to take over the Batesburg-Leesville program. But he returned back to Georgia in 2023 to take over at Loganville.

Cathcart was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Presbyterian College from 2001-03 before heading to Habersham Central.
