A 12-year-old student was arrested Monday after they allegedly made a threat at Legacy Knoll Middle School.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that the student was removed from the class and school resource officers were notified of the threat.

The student was removed from the school and arrested after an investigation. The student was then taken to juvenile court and detained by the Judge.

The principal at Legacy Knoll Middle School Dr. Miriam Ledford-Lyle, sent an email to parents notifying them of the incident and advising parents to talk to their children.

“Our school system takes all threats, whether verbal or written, seriously. The safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority. All threats are diligently investigated by school and district administration in collaboration with our local law enforcement authorities. I urge all families to continue discussing with their students the importance of their words and actions. As our school system noted in last Friday’s communication, making verbal or electronic threats or jokes are considered serious and will be met with severe consequences. I genuinely appreciate your ongoing partnership in ensuring the safety of our students and in maintaining a secure environment where they can thrive.," the email read.

Sheriff Mangum also emphasized parents talking to their children about the importance of their words and actions.

“There are severe consequences for any student making these threats. We will continue to investigate all of these threats and proceed with whatever can be done,” Mangum said on Facebook.
