Two drivers were charged with racing along Ga.365 Monday during a high visibility traffic enforcement campaign by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit over Labor Day weekend.
The sheriff’s office checked two vehicles, a Hyundai Sedan and Kia SUV, driving at speeds of 95 and 99 mph, according to a release from the county. Both vehicles were reportedly traveling nearly side by side southbound just north of Duncan Bridge Road.
A Habersham Sheriff’s Office Special Operations HEAT Unit conducted a traffic stop on both vehicles. The driver of the Kia was charged with operating a vehicle while license suspended. The driver of the Hyundai was charged with DUI.
Both were charged with operating a vehicle without valid insurance, speeding, reckless driving, and racing.
Habersham County reported that the Labor Day weekend ended with no fatalities in the county.
“We ask each driver to continue to remain calm while behind the wheel, maintain safe and lawful speeds, buckle up, refrain from distractions from mobile devices, and not drive while impaired,” Deputy Phillip Young of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations HEAT Unit, said. “Voluntary compliance by our drivers and providing receptive information to our drivers is the most effective way to keep our roads safe. However, to those who do commit violations while traveling on our roadways, the Sheriff’s Office will continue our proactive enforcement efforts to put an end to hazardous driving violations on our roadways.”
