Just in time for the Labor Day weekend of outdoor activities, more and more state parks in Georgia are making their trails and lakes accessible with all-terrain chairs and shoreline dock lifts for disabled travelers.
Georgia's Department of Natural Resources has teamed with the Aimee Copeland Foundation in recent years to provide funds, all-terrain accessible wheelchairs and dock lifts through the Outdoors Beyond Barriers initiative for participation in state parks, rivers and lakes.
Ten parks were originally provided with all-terrain wheelchairs in 2023, but Fox 5 in Atlanta recently reported that the number of parks with such devices has doubled to 20 this year, including Don Carter State Park at Lake Lanier, Smithgall Woods Park in Helen, and Fort Yargo Park in Winder.
