Two people injured after multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 85 in Franklin County

By Hamilton Keener Anchor / Reporter

Two people were injured Thursday afternoon in a four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 85 Southbound near mile marker 157 in Franklin County.

The Georgia State Patrol said the wreck occurred at around 1:05 p.m. when a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Riley Caroline Bentley, 20 of Martin was driving behind a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pulling a utility trailer on I-85 Southbound in the left lane.

When the Silverado slowed down for traffic the front of the Volkswagen struck the rear of the utility trailer.

GSP officials said after the initial impact, a 2024 GMC Sierra driven by Ryan Allen Gardner, 38 of Monticello, struck the back of the Volkswagon.

The force of the second collision caused the front of the Volkswagen to hit the trailer of the Silverado again, which caused the Silverado to be pushed into a flatbed trailer being pulled by a 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 in the southbound left lane.

Bentley and Gardner were cited for following too closely.

Franklin County EMS transported Gardner to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bentley was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville with non-life-threatening Injuries.

Both lanes of I-85 Southbound were closed for nearly an hour for cleanup.
