UPDATE 7/10 at 2 p.m.: Owner of Sinkhole Atlanta Brandon Sewell said that the cause of the sinkhole is an unmarked 18-inch diameter pipe that was connected to the 54-inch pipe that caused a sinkhole last June, with it being shut down until May of this year. The 18-inch pipe connected to the 54-inch one, and GDOT and Sinkhole Atlanta did not notice it during the repair of the original pipe.
Sewell says work will begin within seven to 10 days. Once work starts, it will take another few weeks.
"As long as we have decent weather, within four weeks we should have that road back open permanently," Sewell said.
Sewell did say it's a much smaller project than the previous one. Sewell says the length is approximately 30-feet of pipe.
"It wasn't intentional, but we're taking care of it as fast as humanly possible," Sewell said.
A sinkhole forming has shut access down to the entrance ramp at Dawsonville Highway traveling west at the Shallowford Road traffic signal.
The closure is in effect until further notice according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
The sinkhole occurred at the entrance of Mister Car Wash on Dawsonville Highway and was caused by a drain pipe failure.
All vehicles traveling west who wish to enter the plaza are urged to go to the next light and turn right opposite of Green Hill Circle Drive. All vehicles traveling east should turn left at the Home Depot entrance according to officials.
