Local poultry icon Abit Massey passed away on Friday following a recent diagnosis and battle with cancer.

"Abit is a living legend in regards to the impact that he's had on our great state, especially when it comes to agriculture and poultry and that will be felt for generations to come," Governor Brian Kemp said at a recent tribute to Massey's legacy. "It is certainly a testament to a life well lived that so many of our state's influential leaders past and present that take the time to honor him here today."

Massey was a previous president of the Georgia Poultry Federation, a position from which he retired in 2009. However, following his time with the GPF, Massey remained as an active, involved member within the industry.

Massey graduated from the University of Georgia in 1949, where he has since served on various boards including being president of the UGA Alumni Association and serving on the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association Board, to name a few.

"I would suggest that a biography needs to be written about Abit Massey, and it needs to be titled, 'The best governor, the state of Georgia never had,'" former Georgia Governor Nathan Deal said regarding Massey.
