City of Gainesville to hold 3 hearings for proposed increase to 2024 property taxes

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter

The City of Gainesville is set to hold three public hearings to allow residents to share their thoughts on a proposed increase to the 2024 property taxes.

The city announced Wednesday its proposal to increase the 2024 property taxes it will levy by 5.49% over the rollback millage rate.

Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value of taxable property in the county. When the prices of properties sold in the last year in the county indicate there has been a trending increase in the fair market value of a property, the board is legally required to re-evaluate  the value of such property and adjust the assessment.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year's digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred, the city said in a release.

Gainesville’s governing authority has reportedly tentatively approved a millage rate higher than the rollback rate, however, before the rate can be finalized, the city is required by law to provide the public with the opportunity to express their opinions on the increase through the hearings.

All Gainesville citizens are invited to attend the hearings, which will occur on three seperate dates.

The first hearing will take place on Thursday, June 13,  at 9 a.m. at the Gainesville Administrative Building, Boardroom, 300 Henry Ward Way, 3rd Floor, Gainesville, Georgia 30501.

The other two hearings will take place on Tuesday, June 18, at 6 p.m. and  Tuesday, July 2, at 5:30 p.m.  Both hearings will be held at the Gainesville Justice Center, Municipal Court Room, 701 Queen City Parkway SW, Gainesville, Georgia 30501.
