What's Happening This Weekend: Memorial Day edition

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, and there will be plenty to do on your three-day weekend.

Here is this weekend's list of events around Northeast Georgia:

Weekend Events Friday, May 24-27

Event Name: 20th Annual Memorial Day Parade
Event Date & Time: Memorial Day, May 27, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
Event Location: Green St., Gainesville
Event Details: Join us as we honor our men and women in service. The parade will start at the First Baptist Church on Green St., going south onto E.E. Butler Pkwy and end at the Bank of America on Spring St. For details, go to

Event Name: Red, White and Bluegrass & Bach
Event Date & Time: Friday, May 24, 7 p.m.
Event Location: Suwanee Town Center Park, 330 Town Center Ave., Suwanee
Event Details: The City of Suwanee is hosting a patriotic outdoor concert featuring bluegrass and some orchestra music. Bring your own chairs or blankets. Food will be available for purchase. For more details, go to

Event Name: Dawsonville Memorial Day Ceremony
Event Date & Time: Memorial Day, May 27, 10 a.m.
Event Location: Veterans Memorial Park, Dawsonville
Event Details: Come honor our veterans with this special ceremony. 

Event Name: Memorial Day Car Show
Event Date & Time: Saturday, May 25, 8 am. – 2 p.m.
Event Location: Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, Dawsonville
Event Details: Enjoy some cars, vendors, crafts and food! Top prizes will be given to the best, most unusual cars/trucks.  

Event Name: Winder Memorial Day Ceremony
Event Date & Time: Friday, May 26, 11:30 a.m.  
Event Location: Winder Cultural Arts Center, 105 E. Athens St., Winder
Event Details: The City of Winder will remember those who served with an event that includes a keynote speaker, as well as the City‘s Police and Fire Honor Guard. Light refreshments will be provided prior to the event. 

Event Name: Cleveland Memorial Day Ceremony   
Event Date & Time: Memorial Day, May 27, 9 a.m.  
Event Location: Freedom Park, Cleveland
Event Details: Honor those who served as the local high school ROTC will present the colors and the Honor Guard will present the 21-gun salute and perform Taps. The ceremony will honor each brand of the military.    

Event Name: Helen Memorial Day Ceremony
Event Date & Time: Memorial Day, May 27, 10 a.m.
Event Location: Veterans Park, Helen
Event Details: Join us as a retired  U.S. Army Colonel will be the guest speaker honoring those who served in all branches of the military.  

Event Name: Cumming Memorial Day Ceremony  
Event Date & Time: Friday, May 24, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.   
Event Location: Cumming City Center, Lou Sobh Amphitheater, Cumming 
Event Details: Free parking and free admission. Bring your own chair. All are welcome as we honor our military men and women. 

Event Name: Lawrenceville Memorial Day Ceremony 
Event Date & Time: Memorial Day, May 27, 1 p.m.
Event Location: Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial, Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Dr., Lawrenceville
Event Details: Join us as a retired Colonel will be our keynote speaker. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will also deliver remarks, as well as Gwinnett Fire Chief Fred Cephas. For details, go to  

Event Name: Kick Off to Summer at Butler Park
Event Date & Time: Saturday, May 25, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Event Location: Butler Park, 1370 Athens St., Gainesville
Event Details: The spray ground will officially be open this weekend. Join us for lawn games, music, food and dessert vendors, a cake walk and a good time! This is a free community event.  

Event Name: Grand Opening Aquatic Center
Event Date & Time: Saturday, May 25, 9:30 a.m.
Event Location: Pinetree Recreation Center, Dahlonega
Event Details: The long-awaited aquatic center for Lumpkin County is now opening just in time for Memorial Day Weekend! A ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow with the pool, slides and lazy river open for fun! Opening Day will also have some giveaway prizes.

Event Name: Bavarian Fest
Event Date & Time: Saturday, May 25, 6 – 11 p.m.
Event Location: Helen Festhalle, 1074 Edelweiss Strasse, Helen
Event Details: Enjoy a bit of Bavaria with sauerkraut, hot dogs, pretzels, a live Oompa band, dancing and more! Wine and beer also available for purchase. Honor those who served our country with some dancing and fun! Hosted by the Helen Chamber of Commerce. For details, go to   

Event Name: Mountain Lakes Resort Rodeo
Event Date & Time: Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25, Gates open at 6 p.m., Rodeo at 7:30 p.m.
Event Location: Mountain Lakes Resort, 560 Mtn. Shadows Dr., Cleveland

Event Name: 17th Annual Cars and Guitars Festival
Event Date & Time: Saturday, May 25, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Event Name: Movies in the Market  
Event Date & Time: Friday, May 24, 8:30 p.m.  
Event Location: Farmer’s Market, 110 Airport Road, Baldwin
Event Details: Bring your lawn chair, a blanket and join us. Concessions will be available! The movie will be Moana. All proceeds will go to the Shop with a Hero program.    

Event Name: Midland Music Festival
Event Date & Time: Saturday, May 25, 5 p.m.
Event Location: Arts Council Smithgall Arts Center, Gainesville
Event Details: This music festival will be held outdoors at the Smithgall Arts Center. Enjoy local brews, delicious food, and of course, great music. SkynFolks, a Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band, will be headlining for the event. Other bands include a Van Morrison Tribute Band, and a local band, GoodFolk. Tickets are $30 presale and $35 at the door.

Event Name: Hartwell Lakeside Music Festival
Event Date & Time: Sunday, May 26, 4 – 10 p.m.
Event Location: Hartwell Lakeside Resort, 330 Hart State Park Rd., Hartwell
Event Details: Join us at the beach for this fun music festival. Live music featuring the six top regional bands will have you singing and dancing all night long.
