The Gainesville- Northeastern Bar Association recognized two award recipients for their service and contributions to the local legal community during its annual Law Day Luncheon on Wednesday.
Superior Court Judge Kathelene F. Gosselin was presented with the A. R. Kenyon Award, which honors a lawyer whose career demonstrates professionalism, integrity, excellence and dedication to the public good.
Judge Gosselin was nominated for the prestigious honor by U.S. District Judge Richard W. Story, and Managing Attorney of the Gainesville Georgia Legal Services Program and former award recipient Wendy Glasbrenner.
Judge Gosselin moved to Gainesville in 1980 and became the first woman to be elected to judicial offices in both Hall and Dawson counties. She will retire at the end of 2024 after 38 years on the bench.
Vicente Bautista was recognized with the Association's Liberty Bell Award, which honors a non-lawyer who rendered note-worthy service to the legal community.
Judge Gosselin presented the award to Bautista and recalled hiring him as a bailiff in Hall County State Court in the 1980’s, according to a release from the Association.
Bautista assisted many Spanish speakers that arrived in Hall County at the time, and later became a certified court interpreter. He earned the honor by promoting a better understanding of the Constitution, encouraging respect for the law and courts, contributing to effective functioning of government institutions and fostering a better understanding of the rule and law.
