City of Cornelia receives PlanFirst honors and distinction

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The City of Cornelia has received renewal in the statewide PlanFirst program, which recognizes excellence in community planning. PlanFirst is a program under the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

The PlanFirst program rewards communities that demonstrate successful comprehensive plan implementation with state incentives.

From a press release by the City of Cornelia, their Community Development Director Jessie Owensby said, “This designation is very important to us because our Comprehensive Plan is developed relying heavily on public input. PlanFirst designation reassures our taxpayers that we are doing what we say we are going to do, and we are doing what they said they wanted us to do. That should be the goal of all public servants and local communities.”

Communities must have a proven record of comprehensive planning success in the areas of goals, leadership, community participation, and implementation in order to receive recognition for this honor.

It is the second consecutive, three year term for which Cornelia has received this distinction, having first been recognized by the GDCA for PlanFirst in 2021.
