Gwinnett Public Schools to launch AI Policy Lab initiative

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter

Gwinnett County Public Schools is partnering with  EdSAFE AI Alliance to guide educators in using artificial intelligence safely and ethically through the establishment of a new AI Policy Lab.

The lab will be a part of a nationwide network of similar policy initiatives intended to promote the responsible development and use of AI.

“In Gwinnett County Public Schools, we believe it's crucial for our students to understand the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence as it becomes increasingly integrated into our society,” GCPS Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts, shared in a press release. “Teaching responsible AI practices not only prepares our students for the future workforce, it also empowers them to be ethical stewards of technology.”

GCPS’ AI Policy Lab will provide policy recommendations and educational materials for teachers, students, and parents. It will also aim to improve policies to align with real-world applications, emphasizing engaging the community, parents, guardians, and students.

“This collaboration leverages our AI-Ready pilot experience and the powerful network of leaders to create policies and practices in support of responsible and ethical use of AI,” GCPS’ Director of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Sallie Holloway said. “This collective will provide meaningful and practical support for stakeholders nationwide, and we look forward to the work ahead.”

The new lab is a continuation of the school system’s previous AI related initiatives, including its AI-Future Ready pilot, which was launched in 2019.

Additionally, the district is a member of the Digital Promise GenAI working group, an advisory board of educational leaders participating in shared learning and leading the development of AI policy and guidance.
