GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Chestatee used a four-run third inning to grab the lead and then held on for a 5-4 win over White County on Monday at the Lynn Cottrell Complex.

Ethan Dunn had a two-run double in the big inning as they erased an early 2-0 deficit to the Warriors. Eli Chaffin later scored on a passed ball in the fifth for the eventual game-winner.

Jake Hitchcock got the win for the War Eagles (4-4) going four innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six. He also had a pair of hits and two RBI at the plate.

Trevor Butler took the loss for White County. Butler surrendered five runs on seven hits and walked three in 4 2/3 innings.

White County (5-3) which has lost two straight following a five-game win streak, cut into the Chestatee lead with a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh. The Warriors had the go-ahead run on base but Chestatee’s Tucker Dearing was able to get out of the jam for the save.

The Class 4A No. 1-ranked Bears scored in every inning en route to a four-inning win over the Jaguars in both teams’ Region 8-4A openers.

As a crossover game between the North and South subregions, those games will only count in the standings for the region tournament at the end of the season.

Nine different players knocked in runs for Cherokee Bluff (6-0), with KT Thompson and Caleb Miele each driving in a pair of runs.

The Bears scored two in the first, five in the second to make it 7-1, and then added three in the third and put the game out of reach with six in the fourth with Ben Zawacki drawing a bases-loaded walk to end the game.

Cherokee Bluff next will travel to Hoover, Ala., to take on Fairhope (Ala.) in the Perfect Game Tournament at the Hoover Met beginning on Thursday.
