Duluth City Police warns of Valentine's Day scammers

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Law enforcement officials are finding that not even Valentine's Day is immune to potential scammers for financial gain.

The city of Duluth's police department has posted a warning that there are cases where scammers may invest weeks, event months, pretending to form a "genuine" connection before shifting conversations before shifting conversations to financial matters.

Some of the scammers will attempt to tap into investment or cryptocurrency accounts as part of their scheme, according to a recent FBI press release.

The Duluth Police Department's Facebook page posts some suggestions to help prevent a scam:

  • Do not disclose personal information or act on financial advice from an online acquaintance.
  • Google the person's name or photograph to uncover potential scams.
  • Trust your own instincts; reach out to your bank as soon as anything seems off with your finances.
