The Gwinnett Housing Corporation announced in January that they are partnering with MicroLife Institute to build the county’s first tiny home neighborhood, otherwise known as a cottage court. This project aims to address the “missing middle”, or lack of mid-priced housing in the area.
The idea was made possible thanks to Gwinnett County’s updates to their development ordinances, which were implemented on the first of the year. The location of this development has yet to be announced, but the project will feature cottage-style homes that will be up to 750 sq. ft. and priced so they are attainable to families earning up to 80% of the area’s median income.
Both the GHC and Microlife Institute are non-profit organizations with the goal of strengthening communities and empowering community members through adequate, accessible housing.
“The much-anticipated ordinance overhaul will enable small, nonprofit developers such as GHC and MicroLife Institute to address the growing need for affordable housing in Gwinnett”, said Lejla Prljaca, Gwinnett Housing Corporation CEO. “Today, first-time home buyers encounter tremendous challenges as they compete with investors making cash offers and waiving contingencies. Additionally, historically high mortgage interest rates and rising property taxes are diminishing their purchasing power. By offering affordably priced homes, we hope that more families can achieve their dreams of homeownership”.
