Sunday morning storm causes damage in Habersham County; thousands without power through the day

Thousands of Habersham EMC customers were without power following Sunday's severe thunderstorm that struck during early morning hours, mainly due to downed trees across area power lines.

High wind gusts between 30 and 50 miles per hour created blocked roadways after 4:30 a.m. on December 29, leaving crews from Habersham EMC (HEMC), safety officials from Habersham County and local cities to tend to roadway blockages, and damaged properties.

One business in Clarkesville, Cap'n Auto Service of Ellison Street sustained noticeable roof and structure damage to its facility Sunday. No injuries were reported, while several streets in the area north and east of Downtown Clarkesville were without power from the surface street damage from trees and debris.

The City of Clarkesville's Fire Station also reported roof and structure damage during the Sunday morning storms, but no injuries were reported.

All HEMC customers had power and services restored to their facilties by 7:00 p.m. Sunday, while cleanup efforts are expected to continue for the near future.
