Gainesville authorities are investigating a potential homicide after a man was found dead inside an apartment over the weekend.

Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook said Monday that officers were called to the Walton Summit Apartments on E.E. Butler Parkway early Saturday morning when they found the man dead.

"Initially (the call) was for a welfare check at one of the apartments," Holbrook said. "We were unable to make contact with the individual inside the apartment. We were able to make entry into that apartment, at which point officers found the male subject deceased."

No other details on the case have been released, but Holbrook said the case is being investigated as a homicide and the man's body has been sent for autopsy.

"We are awaiting autopsy results to determine more information as well as a proper identification of the individual," Holbrook said. "We are currently hoping that someone in the area may have seen something suspicious and may be able to assist us in this investigation."

Anyone who saw suspicious activity at or near the apartment complex on Friday or Saturday is asked to contact Gainesville police through their website.
