MADISON, Ga. – East Jackson had a furious comeback fall just short in a 52-49 thriller at Madison County in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs Friday night.
Trailing 28-13 at halftime, the Eagles started the second half with a blocked punt for a touchdown before Morgan County answered two minutes later to stretch the lead back out to 35-20. The Eagles answered almost immediately with a Brooks Saunders 40-yard rushing score to trim the lead to eight again and then tied the game with a 91-yard passing score and a two point conversion.
The Bulldogs responded late in the third quarter with a passing score to retake the lead, but again East Jackson had an answer before the end of the third quarter to tie it up again at 42-42.
The fireworks continued right at the start of the fourth quarter as Morgan County scored quickly, but the Eagles scored midway through the period on a 19-yard score to tie it up. The Eagles got an interception but couldn't capitalize, punting the ball away to the Bulldogs. Morgan County quickly moved the ball down the field and kicked a field goal to get the win.
