UPDATE on Oct. 8 @ 5 p.m.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released details on the officer-involved shooting at the Gwinnett County Jail on Monday.

44-year-old Emmanuel Patrick Bearden of Peachtree Corners is the alleged gunman and is in critical but stable condition after officers fired back at him.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

Preliminary details from the GBI reveal that at around 3 p.m., Bearden entered the Gwinnett County Jail wearing body armor while with his young daughter. Deputies tried to address his purpose for being at the jail and he became hostile.

Bearden then carried his daughter to his car and retrieved “multiple guns” according to officials.

He then reportedly shot at deputies and officers returned fire, immediately rendering aid to Bearden who was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The daughter was unharmed during the incident and has been reunited with other family members.

The GBI has charged Bearden with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Additional charges are expected.

The GBI will now conduct an independent investigation that will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
