“In the lead up to the Presidential Election, we are releasing our first-ever Black Youth Study as a special report looking specifically at the priorities guiding young Black voters in Georgia,” said Christine White, Founder and Board Chair, Collective Renaissance Guild. “Voters, organizers, and community leaders can leverage this data to help mobilize and inform, as it’s clear that economic justice, healthcare affordability and access, and criminal justice reform are major youth concerns. As we countdown to Election Day in November, it's imperative for the progressive movement to keep a pulse on the culture, continue to address the issues that matter to young people, and encourage them to vote to help determine the policies that shape our lives”

The research posed timely questions to participants, such as "If President for a day, what would you do?" The responses highlighted two top priorities: 22% of respondents would raise the minimum wage, and another 22% would end gun violence. Protecting reproductive rights also surfaced as a top concern for young Black women. When asked to identify the most important issues affecting Black people, the top concerns were:

  • Economic Justice: 39% identified low wages as a critical issue, while 37% highlighted the lack of affordable housing.
  • Healthcare: 33% shared that the lack of affordable healthcare is a major concern.
  • Criminal Justice Reform: 32% are concerned about police violence against Black people, and 30% shared that mass incarceration of Black people is a concern.

Focus groups found that 90% of participants supported protecting the voting rights of Black people, providing free universal childcare for preschool children, providing free healthcare access for everyone, and making college affordable. A deeper dive into local issues through the question “In Georgia, What Matters to You?” revealed that housing costs are a top concern, with 41% of participants citing it as a top concern.

“The '2024 Black Youth Study' reveals the urgency of engaging young Black voters, especially in Georgia,” said Camille Thompson, Executive Director, Collective Renaissance Guild. “With 72% of our youngest respondents being the least likely to report being registered to vote, we have a clear mandate to intensify our outreach and education efforts. We hope this study will help guide strategies to empower this critical demographic, ensuring their participation in shaping Georgia's future through the ballot box."

Georgia is a key swing state that plays a significant role in determining presidential elections. Young Black voters are a key demographic to reach for election momentum and decisive victories. Looking ahead at political participation, it’s important to note that 81% of study respondents are currently registered to vote. Importantly, 72% of the youngest respondents are the least likely to report being registered to vote, and 66% are the least likely to vote in 2024. These findings underscore the need for targeted outreach and investment in young Black voters. This demographic is poised to play a major role in shaping Georgia's democratic future.

With over 3,000 participants, this iterative, mixed-method research study used culturally responsive approaches to data collection in three phases: web-based surveys, in-person outreach, and focus groups.

The goal of this project is to amplify what young people have to say and share relevant voter insights to help develop messaging and grassroots programs that successfully mobilize young voters.
