Tax season is here for 2024. One area law enforcement agency is warning residents and business owners to watch for scammers seeking tax information to submit fraudulent claims.
Banks County Sheriff's Office reminds residents to be cautious of IRS impersonators, and to never provide personal details to callers claiming to be the IRS or another third party.
The Banks Sheriff's office social media post says scammers can use your taxpayer information to submit fraudulent tax returns, stealing your tax refund, and suggests that filers should be alert to signs of tax identity theft.
Be alert to signs of tax-related identity theft:
• You get a letter from the IRS inquiring about a suspicious tax return that you did not file.
• You can’t e-file your tax return because of a duplicate Social Security number.
• You get a tax transcript in the mail that you did not request.
• You get an IRS notice that an online account has been created in your name.
• You get an IRS notice that your existing online account has been accessed or disabled when you took no action.
• IRS records indicate you received wages or other income from an employer you didn’t work for.
